How you can support homelessness and domestic violence Prevention in 2018

Is your New Year’s resolution to make the world a better place to live? Do you want to help the homeless and prevent domestic violence? You couldn’t have chosen a better cause and we applaud your commitment as well. If you want to know how you can achieve these objectives we have got the answers for you.

The Need for Shelters

The most important thing you can do to prevent domestic violence and homelessness in 2018 is support shelters. Shelters provide the one thing that people in both domestic violence and homeless situations need – respite. People who are homeless aren’t homeless by choice. Many of them run away from abusive situations at home. They run away from their families because they are bullied or not accepted for who they are. They also run away because they may have undiagnosed mental health issues.

The same is true for domestic violence. Many women stay in violent and abusive relationships simply because they have nowhere to go. They have no personal income, no family to turn to, and no place where they can get some respite. Thus they suffer the abuse silently, knowing they have no other choice.

That is where shelters come in. Shelters act as safe spaces for these people. The man who has no place to sleep and no place to wash himself because his family doesn’t want him deserves to have a safe space. The woman who is beaten by her husband every day deserves the chance to a better life and shelter meanwhile. Many of these people are parents as well and their children need shelter as well. Shelters are therefore a necessity.

Much more than financial help

Most people think that donating to a charity is the only way they can help but this isn’t true. These shelters love getting all the help they need. A helping had is often too expensive for them to hire so when people volunteer they are able to serve people much better. Maybe they need people who can come in and cook some food for people in the shelter.

Maybe they need people who have organizational skills to run the shelter better. They may even need people to help with fundraising drives. If you don’t have the money don’t worry – you still have much to offer if you are willing to lend a helping hand to these shelters. Get in touch with the local shelters – call them or message them on Facebook – and ask how you can help. Make a real difference in people’s lives. Your commitment is important to them.

Financial support is important too

That being said, these shelters need financial support as well. They need to provide shelter, they need to pay bills, they need to buy food, and much more. If you can help financially you should. If you have extra money lying around, think about donating to a shelter and making a positive impact on your local community. These problems will only be solved when we start caring and doing something about them.
